Evening court guide

Boston tennis courts with lights for evening play

Rally’s reviewed directory identifies public Boston and Cambridge tennis courts where lighting is confirmed. A lighted listing means the facility has court lighting—not that lights are switched on every night or that a court is available. Check park hours, programming, seasonal rules, and any reservation requirement before traveling.

What a “lighted court” listing actually confirms

The directory flag confirms that court lighting is listed for the facility. It does not promise that the switch is player-controlled, that lights operate until park closing, or that every fixture works. Seasonal schedules, programming, neighborhood rules, and maintenance can all shorten the usable evening window.

Check two times, not one

Compare sunset with the park’s closing time, then confirm the operator’s lighting schedule. Arrive early enough to inspect the court and leave safely if the lights do not come on.

Plan an evening game around the real constraints

  1. Confirm the park’s closing time and the lighting schedule separately.
  2. Check whether school, league, lesson, or permitted use has priority.
  3. Reserve the court if its operator offers bookings; otherwise review waiting and time-limit rules.
  4. Choose a meeting point at the court enclosure, not only the park name.
  5. Bring a backup court and enough daylight to change plans safely.

Lighting questions worth asking

  • Are the lights automatic, scheduled, staff-controlled, or activated at the court?
  • Do all courts share the same lighting hours?
  • Does a reservation extend past the normal lighting cutoff?
  • Is the walk from transit or parking lighted after play?
  • Where should a failed light or unsafe condition be reported?
